I need to make a ballet costume. Please help me!?

I have to perform a short ballet solo at my dancing school and I need a costume. It must be lyrical i.e. not a tutu and it must homemade. If anyone has any simple ideas PLEASE tell me! Love from Lyla

Get a leotard, tights, and some long strips of fabric, start at one shoulder and twist the fabric around your body and then down the opposite leg to the shoulder you started with.

You need floppy, thin fabric so it flows well with the dance. Chiffon works well, and if you can find a plain large square chiffon scarf (maybe in a charity shop) you can cut a hole in the middle (carefully - it's easy to cut one too big) and sew a waistband round the hole either using a wide piece of satin elastic or matching/contrasting satin ribbon (which you tie, leaving long flowing ribbon strands).

If you can't find a scarf, there's an excellent fabric supplier at http://www.fabricland.co.uk - you have to place your order over the phone with a card. If you're not sure which fabric to choose, they will send you small snippets (swatches) before you buy. If you don't sew very well, try to find a fabric that doesn't fray at the edge, so you don't have to deal with a hem.

Don't be afraid to ask.

Buying the fabric yourself increases your options.

Another shape you might want to try is a semi-circle, with the flat side going round your waist. You can either make a small skirt with a flat waist, or a larger one with the waist gathered under a strip of fabric or ribbon for the waistband, like these: http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q158/...

If you're not allowed to use a pre-made leotard, make a simple dress by measuring around your bust and cutting a strip of fabric (slightly stretchy if possible) to go round, about six inches (15cm) deep at the front, going down to 4 or 5 inches at the back. Cut a couple of short shoulder straps, and then, in a contrasting floppy fabric, cut a large circular skirt, with a centre hole to stitch the bust part to. Use velcro to fasten it.

I made about 20 0f these dresses using this method for the tops (not full circles for the skirts though)

http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q158/... It works just as well with a square - making points at the bottom of the skirt.

Here they are in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxYHkjBdc...
You can buy tights and decorate the outfit yourself using materials from the local fabric store. You know your part better than anybody else, use your imagination to create the personality of this dance. Better yet, you can show off your inner dancer through your costume. Remember also the discount table of the fabric store is a great place to get ideals and bargains, so is the back of the closet. I have a beautiful black knit skirt that wraps, I had to dance at a nursing home so, I used the skirt with a black knit top. I double wrap the skirt ,tied an odd bow off center and danced the evening away, a la Ginger Rogers. Think about what you have in the back of the closet or packed away from summer, it can be quicker to alter what you have than to make it new.

Broke a leg, kid.

I bought cheap ones @ payless %26amp; just picked up a new pair from ---of all places--- Wal-Mart. I went in there for a birthday gift for my sons friend, snooped around a bit and was surprised when I found a comfy, cheap pair of flats. They were like 14.99

but, word of advice with flat shoes if you wear them for great lengths of time: cheap is not always best!!... %26amp; be kind to your arches

Ebay. Type in ballet or ballet shoes or ballet flats in womens shoes.
Search google under CHEAP BALLET FLATS STORES and it should pop up a lot of stuff. If you are looking for ballet flat shoes to wear like everyday serach stores with Mary Janes, they are really cheap and cute.
your feet and poor toes and you're asking for cheap shoes? perfection comes with dedication and bad feet comes with bad bad shoes.
pay less any pay less around there
i bought mine at Payless, they we're $18.99. They are eally comfortable and i wear 'em like everyday. i'm sure you could get at the Payless site, payless.com.

Could I become competent at ballet at this age?

I would love to learn ballet and am 22. Obviously there is no way I could be a professional, but could I become a competent dancer? I haven't taken any type of dance lessons before but I have taught myself the basics of a few types of dance (doesn't mean I'm any good though!!) but I'm not particularly fit (certainly not unfit but not flexible etc). With enough practise and a good class is it possible that I could become a reasonable dancer (for fitness and enjoyment, not performance) or is it too late?

Could I become competent at ballet at this age?secure browser

You should definitely try ballet, it's not too late!!! If you really love it, you could take classes and practice at home and become quite good. My friend started ballet when she was 16, and now at 18 she competes.

Just commit yourself to stretching every day (for flexibility) and to practising, and you will get the hang of it.

Ballet is great for the body, so I do recommend you try it. It can keep you fit without having to run or do pushups, and can allow yourself to express yourself through movement. Also, because it is an exercise, you will realease endorphins and feel happier, and because it is stretching, you will realease toxins from your muscles and be able to fight illnesses better, and feel clean and loose.

Go for it! I'm 24 and have considered it. It's never too late to pursue a dream!!!!
sure why not?! go into plays! its toe thats really hard! where you have to put the wood block in your shoes to make it look like your on your toes. but ballet you could definitely do!
If you want to try it, try it. If you don't like it, just quit =)
It鈥檚 definitely not too late to become competent, confident and even to perform. I have seen it with my own eyes over and over again. I include pointe work as well. It will depend, however, on the same factors that apply to anyone; your natural physical gifts, your dedication and time commitment and the expertise of your teachers. I recommend this book; Classical Ballet Technique by Gretchen Warren. If fact, I recommend it to EVERYONE interested in classical ballet. The images in particular are invaluable, the terminology is precise and you will refer to it constantly. Good luck, don鈥檛 push too hard鈥?it does take time measured in years, not months.
i would suggest taking adult classes. many studios have them! its really fun apparantly. lol. i got my mom to take it and she loved it and actually got really good. they have age groups at my studio like 20-30, 30-40 and 50 and up. it would be a lot of fun if you work at it. its not too late!
YES! You certainly can. Actually, there is a woman at the studio I dance at who began dancing in her 70's and, though she isn't the most common dancer, she is amazing at it! So at 22? Learning to dance ballet, even without experience, should be relatively easy with a bit of effort.
dont sell your self short .....you can always becoem MORE then competatn...if its your passion do it even as hobby by your slef or freinds or comunity theart

I no nothing about profeessional ballet and whathte age rangeis but if you are good dont let your own thinking stop you form at least trying out a few times

ona complete side i am leaving you witha silly vid that the only thing incommomn with the subject is it has to do with dance

How can I clean my ballet slippers?

I do ballet and I practice for about two hours, 5 days a week, and 5 on saturdays. It's nasty, but I never clean my flats. I just buy a new pair when they start to look awful or smell. Well, I have a pair of black leather slippers that I love and have used for many preformances, and I don't want to throw them out. How can I clean them?

Place them in the washer on delicate, large load so they will have plenty room.

Or you could hand wash them will gentle soap, rinse and throw them in the dryer.

You could take them to the local dry cleaning but i would do it myself personally!
you can just put them in the wash, but DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DRYER!!! they will shrink!

Is it ok for a boy to wear girls tights to ballet class ?

I am attending a beginner ballet class.I am 21 years old and am the only male in the class.Male ballet tights are very expensive and my mother has suggested wearing a pair of womens ballet tights(black) which are cheaper.Up to now I haven't worn tights to class but I would like to as all the girls wear tights.

Is it ok for a boy to wear girls tights to ballet class ?met opera

Yes you can wear tights branded for women, they aren't really much different from mens tights other than womens/unisex tights are not quite as thick. If you do go with womens/unisex tights you will need to wear a pair of shorts over them cause they are a little more see through or wear two pairs of them. I have seen and heard of a couple of guys wearing tights branded for women in skin tone color under shorts during the winter to keep their legs warm in the studio. As long as you are comfortable with it and your dance instructor is ok with it then it will work.

Is it ok for a boy to wear girls tights to ballet class ?movie theatre opera theater

i mean you said black as long as they aren't pink or something i don't see what the problem is. it's not like anyone's going to able to tell they're women's. so go for it!
Well.. I think womens ballet tights are built differently to men's.. so i would reccomend the men's even though they might be a bit more expensive..

But i would sujest going on ebay.. and buying a 2nd hand pair or even a new pair for much cheaper..

www.ebay.co.uk or .com

you could even go to your nearest 2nd hand shop or even a dance shop that does 2nd hand.. or 1st hand =o)

I hope this helps..

Have Fun in your first ballet class =o)
mens tights are different. You would be best going to a second hand store of art/dance. Or buying them on ebay. I dont know it you can actually tell the difference in men and wemons I think that one just has a little more room in place for certen packages if you know what I mean.
I don't think they'll be very comfortable, and if you're tall you'll have a hard time finding a pair long enough.

What about bike shorts? That might work better. Maybe women's tights from a plus sized store, like Lane Bryant.

How about these places? These tights don't seem too expensive to me.

This one has men's Capezio tights for $15.75.

http://www.discountdance.com/search/cape...
Well, usually no. There is a reason they make special mens' tights. They are thicker and more suited for mens' genital areas and legs.

If you do decide to wear female black tights, wear two pairs layered, and wear athletic shorts over your tights.
i think it will be better if your wear male ballet tights as they will have a different style to the girls

I agree with Janelle, here. Ballet is not just dancing around on your tippy toes...it is painful and a lot of hard work. I would explain but Janelle has a done a fair job at it.

What do you do in ballet ?violin opera theater

You dance around on your toes. Yes I believe it would keep you fit.
You dance in plays, your movements are like a language. It's fancy play dancing. You need terrific flexibility and balance. Your legs would become powerful. But you also have to be very thin and good looking to perform on a grand stage.
Did you know that you can just take the ballet course just to keep fit? it's great exercises and helps stretches the kinks out of the muscles and tendon. My mother at age 45 recovered from breast cancer surgery by taking the ballet course just for the physiotherapy
ill tell you what ballet is becasue ive been doing it since i was 2 and im 15 now.. ballet is very diffuclt becasue you have to have the right technique such as pointed toes, flat back, great posture, poise, straight knees, so on and so fouth.. ballet does keep you fit espically when you get to the higher levels such as elemantary or intermediate foundation.. i am in elemanrty and there is alot of turns.. and devolpes.. which is a very hard things to to.. ballet is alot more than people thiink like its just not a tutu and shoes and you go out on your toes.. there is alot more... ballet is ggreat i love it..! but i would suggest taking a ballet course or introducory before trying it at a studio.. becasue it will be a good intro to the hard steps and new things you will learn.. a typical ballet class for me is a warm up at the bar which is piles toundues gissades and normally grand battement and devolpes then you move in to the center and do center practice which involes jumps (allegro) blancing excerises por de bra kicks and more devolpes and lotsa turns.. then you will do steps across the room to help you.. then normally there is a study, combo or a little dance that we will do and preform in small groups.. ballet is painful and alotta hard work.. go for it! try it see if all you do is dance around on our little tippy toes.. were actually dancing on blisters torn muscles inguries and pain.

i hoped this help you a bit..

If anyone has taken beginning ballet in college, is it a total disaster?

I want to find something fun to do in college, but I don't want to make a fool of myself. Please help!!! I took ballet like 10 years ago, but I just don't want to go into something that's difficult and will make me look stupid.

If anyone has taken beginning ballet in college, is it a total disaster?opera score

No worries.. I'm actually a serious ballet dancer in college but I took a class last semester for non-dance majors just for the added dance time. All I have to say is that most of the girls in that class were total beginners and it truly impressed me how WELL they picked up technique. You would think some of them were dance majors.. So I say YES by all means. You won't make a fool of yourself. There's no such thing and besides, no one even cares. Even if you walked on as a total beginner into an ADVANCED dance majors class, no one would probably take a second look because we are all so focused on ourselves. That's college dance for you :)

PS: At my college there are some dance majors who have had very little to no ballet training... And they look far from stupid!

If anyone has taken beginning ballet in college, is it a total disaster?musicals opera theater

I took ballet 2 as my art elective, but because the class was so small it was combined with beginer ballet, we just did different barres and what not. a lot fo the girls taking it for fun had just that, fun. everyone, even those of us who had danced before understood that of course dance looks goofy when you're just startung. hell, it looks goofy twenty years later when i do it! remember that the exercise youre getting is an awesome bonus and you're trying something new! who cares if you're no pro at the end, the prof knows that beginning ballet has people at many different levels. you'll do wonderfully!
Depending on the college you go to and the teacher you have, it can be fun and on the other hand, it can be difficult. I took Modern Dance in college and it is similar to Ballet. If you decide to take it, just make sure you stretch really good. The teacher might have you doing some things outside of regular exercising.
don't worry, you won't look stupid. just keep telling urself that there are thousands of ppl like you that start ballet late. Of course i wouldn't know your feelings very well because i started ballet at 3 and am now on pointe but every few months there are late starters. Some are just awful but everyone is still very nice to them so i wouldn't be worried...

I'm about to start ballet what should i expect?

like what do you do when you take ballet classes?

I'm about to start ballet what should i expect?palace theatre

First of all, you start out by purchasing leotards, tights and ballet shoes. Once you are correctly dressed, the instructor will start teaching you how to correctly do the following things below:

You should expect to do a lot of stretching exercises on the floor and at the barre to help loosen and stretch all of your muscles, so make sure you have very comfortable ballet shoes. Then you start learning individual ballet steps, starting with the basic positions of the feet and hands. You will also be taught how to hold your head, keep your toes pointed, how to "spot an object" when you learn pirouettes and turns, keep your shoulders down and so forth. If you continue taking ballet "en pointe" (in toe shoes) you will correctly learn how to do all the footwork and ballet steps you learned how to do in ballet shoes, but not all people stick with ballet that long. After you have learned all of the steps and movements, (usually done to classical music, but perhaps not at first), you will learn complete ballet routines (dances). There are a few things that can be done "en pointe" that are difficult or impossible to do in ballet shoes. But if you are disciplined and listen to your ballet master or mistress, you will enjoy learning the gracefulness of ballet. It is almost like floating on air to those that have had many years and love ballet. I practiced at my dance studio at least three to four days a week, in order to stay limber (flexible). We had a pianist that played classical music while we worked out, but some smaller dance schools will use classical records or cd's for you to practice to, so you will learn to keep tempo (time) to the music. If you are planning on making a career out of ballet, you will have to practice many long, dedicated hours, probably six days a week, for many years. A good ballerina has to work very hard to be graceful and light on her feet. Ballet training can also help you with other things, as well, such as becoming a member of a high school drill (dance) team or ice-skating lessons. OH! And never talk in class, unless you raise your hand to ask your teacher a question. Ballet is a form of discipline. I hope this helps give you a little insight as to what you may expect from many ballet studios. Good luck to you! :)

I'm about to start ballet what should i expect?concert tickets opera theater

wow... i'm really proud of you! ballet is not something that most people are interested in. anyway, since the other details some of the specific movements you will be doing, i'll go into the emotional side of it. be prepared for hard work! if you have never taken a ballet class you may become discouraged because the steps are hard... never give up! also, if ballet isn't hard, you are not working. thats the ballet dancers maxim, if it isn't hard you're not working, if it doesn't hurt, you're not stretching. Make sure that you don't take it personally when a teacher corrects you, they don't want to hurt your feelings and they don't dislike you personally but they are trying to make you a better dancer. I highly reccomend buying one of the ballet bibles, Classical Ballet Technique by Gretchen Warren, The Ballet Book: Learning and Appreciating the Secrets of Dance by Nancy Ellison and Hanna Rubin , or The Joffrey Ballet School's Ballet-Fit by Dena Simone Moss and Allison Kyle Leopold. Classical Ballet Technique is one of the classic ballet books, the one that teachers are forever refering to. The Ballet Book is not as helpful but may aid you in understanding what you are aiming for. The Joffery Ballet School's book is helpful for anyone taking their first ballet classes who has an adult reading level and pysique. Don't try any of the steps in these books but do read them all the way through. (ok, ok not all the way through but dont just skim them prior to your first class.) your teacher can reccomend other books later on. I also reccomend getting in pretty good physical shape if you plan on taking more than three classes a week, ballet is VERY strenous when properly performed. Anyway, you are an awsome person and i am really proud of you!
the basic steps like 1st position 2nd postition ect...i took ballet when i was 6 and i didnt like it (but thats just me) now im 13 and have been dancing for 7 years now im in advanced jazz and advanced tap.
Well, expect GOOD things. Think Positive always. well, i just started ballet 2 days ago in the medium hard class. The stretching and the footing was fine. But then came the dancing part lol. DUN DUN DUNNNNN.... You should also buy the right ballet shoes. Not the pointes. The ones that you can stand on your toe with. And pink tights with a balck or pink leotard with or without skirt attached. I perfer no skirt attached, they rip. Anways, you can expect something way out of ur league. All ya need is confidence, and you can dance. You will also learn postitions 1, 2, 3 ,4 ,5 , 6 etc. I haven't learned them, because my teacher expects us to kno w it already.Stretch a lot too. Trust me the first time im like 'when's the next class??" I do it 2x a week Weds. and Sat. I was gonna do monday but i decided not too. GTG now i have yoga!!! ( that helps with ballet)
i dont know what grade you do, but generally you start with barre work then centrework then a curtsy
well usually the first thing you do in ballet is barre work which is just excersices at the barre that imclude things like tendu frappe rond de jambe etc then you will move into the center maybe do some petit allegro or an adage(mispelled i kno)

then you will do a reverance(bow or curtsy to the teacher and painist)

How can I force my son to take ballet dancing?

I'm thinking about taking his Nintendo Wii away because that's all he does since christams. Maybe if they come out with a dancing game I'll let him have it back, or when he agrees to start ballet classes. He thinks that dancing especially ballet is for sissies and girls, but we used it in some football conditioning back in high school, we also used it alot in the special forces to train balance and movement techniques. Some other types of dancing provide mediocre workouts, but I want the best for my boy so he doesn't become a couch potato. Thanks!

Modern PARENTING do not force nor engage others to pick up something which is not to his or her interest.

If you manage to pull through by forcing him. He will be growing up hating you. Cherish him with love, by spending more quality time with him.

If you are a christian, which you did mention about the gift on Christmas Day. Cherish him.

How can I force my son to take ballet dancing?performing art center opera theater

Take him to some productions or shows to get him "into" the beauty of ballet. Maybe it will shine a light and he'd might want to try. If it doesn't work, I don't think it would be good to force him into doing something he doesn't enjoy. How about some type of sport? Basketball, crosscountry, baseball, wrestling? If not maybe he has a special talent like music or arts? Try to inspire him to new extracurriculars; something that you both would agree on. :)

How about drumming lessons?

Good luck!
Firstly i think its great you dont want your son to become a couch potatoe too many kids in america are over weight, but forcing your son to take ballet isnt the answer. Since he doesnt want to take it, it wont help in maing him less lazy it will just make him act out.Maybe sign him up for karate or kick boxing. And make it so your son can only play his game an hour a day so he cant get so caught up into it.

Good luck
Forcing a child to do anything borders on abuse. Making him take ballet will just get him teased and the crap beat out of him in school. Although he might be seen by girls as a 'sensitive" guy and get all the cuties. I do agree spending most of ones time in front of a game or computer is bad. We do not have video games in our house. My 6 year old son is taking both martial arts ad piano lessons. We did not have to "force" him to but found ways to entice his interest. We are far from health nuts but a child can not learn the important lessons of life having no friends sitting in front of a video game all through his childhood.

I know adults who have grown up much like that. They have no clue how to drive a nail with a hammer of do anything remotely mechanical. If the world ever went to crap or there was a disaster they would either die or be a burden on the ones that know how to actually take care of themselves.
I enjoyed Jay's little rant that didn't really have anything to do with your question. You'll never be able to force a kid to like doing something he thinks is for sissies. Maybe try a compromise, get him into gymnastics. It's just as good and it's less sissie like. One of my buddies took it as a kid and we use to make fun of him until one night at a party at my house he was drunk and had his leg in a cast. When he was leaving and trying to go down the stairs he lost his balance and fell forward. At that point he lundged forward (so he would hit the steps) and when he hit the ground he did this amazing tuck and roll and stood right up because of his momentum and his leg never touched the ground. Pretty impressive since he was wasted, I stop making fun of him after that. Gymnastics can also help him in other sports.

Do your feet sweat in ballet flats?

What's up with that? Sweating and unpleasant smell? Why in ballet flats more than any other shoes?

Do your feet sweat in ballet flats?globe theater

It's not so much the style of shoe as the material it's made from. Ballet - style pumps are often not made from leather, and any man made material isn't very breathable so your feet sweat more. Try buying real leather ones, and the problem should go away.

What's going on with my 5th position? (ballet)?

I've just started grade 5 ballet and on our exercises at the bar we have to do a lot beginning in fifth position. When I bend in fifth position I'm nearly completely turned out and it doesn't hurt at all but when I try fifth position standing upright it feels as though my knees and muscles in my thighs are too big to let me straighten my legs fully, even though I'm skinny. It doesn't hurt or anything, it just feels as though I can't straighten because everything's in the way! If i stand up straight and try to get a fifth position comfortably, without the feeling of my knees being in the way then my turn out goes all poopy 0.o Has anyone got any idea why this is? Is it because I need to work on the strength of my turn out? If so how can I do this effectively? Oh and we're about to start pointe, does anyone know how much a good pair of first pointe shoes should cost. (I'm not at a professional ballet school or anything so they're not going to be in great use or anything. Thanks guys =)

What's going on with my 5th position? (ballet)?paramount theater

You most likely need pointe shoes, when I took ballet I seem to remember girls being about 11years old when they started with these. You have to remember that your body is changing and this is okay - it may be just be the way you are proportioned right now.

What's going on with my 5th position? (ballet)?theatre opera theater

When you get your first pointe shoes you should be fitted professionally. A good dance store should be able to this. This process could take an hour to two hours to complete. It is a matter of trying on several pairs of shoes. The shoes can run any where from $70.00 to $120.00. Once you have been fitted and know your shoe, you can order your next pair on line cheaper. Grishko's Elite point shoe is a good beginner. It runs about $80 in stores by me. On line it is $56. Once you have been on pointe for awhile you may find you need to change your brand or style of point shoe.

On your 5th position. Sounds like you do need to work on your turn out. Think of your hips and legs being turned out instead of looking at your feet. Practice your plies. and demi plies. You should be able to control yourself all the way down and back up. Check out some ballet books at your library for some good exercises for turn outs.
Wow. Great questions.

Maybe you should try turning out less in fifth when doing excersises because not only will you hurt yourself if your too turned out but turning in a little bit will help you become more turned out (I know it sounds wierd).

DON'T PUSH IT! If you force your turnout it can seriously damage your knees leading to your hips leading to you back. Yes lots of problems cna evolve.

I do think that it would be good to work out your turnout if a "perfect fifth" is what you aim for.

Also make sure to talk to you teacher about this!!! It will be SO worth it to spend 2 minutes talking to your teacher about something then spending 2 years in Physical Therepy because you landed your jump wrong from trying to force your turnout.

As for the pointe shoes, it really depends on your foot and the type of shoe that fits your foot. Chacotte is one of the most expensive brands out there. I think probably Bloch and Capiezio are the cheapest. I'm not too big on the pointe shoe business. I was one of the lucky ones where I tried on the shoe it fit, it worked, and I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I wish you all the best! Never stop dancing!
This is such a great question for every ballet student to think about!

Your question implies that you are evaluating your 5th position by looking at your feet. Think about this statement; FEET DON'T TURN OUT. Turn out, as I'm sure you know, refers to the outward rotation of the legs (abduction) where the toes DO point to the side. This has nothing to do with the feet or toes however. It has to do with outward rotation of the hip achieved by proper activation of what are known as the "deep outward rotators" (quadratus femoris, obdurator internus, obdurator externus, piriformis, gemelius superior and gemelius inferior... and yes, I looked them up.) ( "Inside Ballet Technique" by Valerie Grieg, pg 48.) .

Very few people can WORK in a "perfect" 5th. Your "perfect" 5th is the maximum outward rotation of YOUR legs, shins, ankles and feet where you are able to maintain correct alignment as YOU work. This varies with the individual like everything else.

It's better to think of your 5th as something that happens at the top of your legs and not somewhere near the floor. It can be very detrimental for your overall progress to cross your feet into a closed 5th position if your knees, ankles and feet aren't properly ALIGNED. (strain on the knees, collapse in the ankle, weight lifting off of the little toe side of the foot, never strong enough for pointe work, etc...) In your 5th, you want to feel your thighs crossed as high as possible. Make SURE your knees are placed carefully over the center of your foot when you plie in ANY position. Same with the ankles; CENTERED in relation to the foot (not falling inward!) and weight distributed evenly across the metatarsals, especially the outside of the foot (little toe).

Try this; face the barre in parallel 1st position (turned in, ankle bones almost touching). Take a deep demi plie. Check to see that your knees are over the center of your feet. Feel your weight distributed over the whole foot. I should be able to place two fingers under your arch when you plie and not get them crushed! Now, rotate outwards into 1st turned out and feel the same things... knees over feet, weight on outside metatarsal, seat down and all that... Feel different?? Try 5th...

Hmmm... hard to close that 5th up snug like you want it and keep this good alignment huh? OK... now, open some space in your 5th. See if you can keep that good alignment with a slightly opened 5th. (still heel to toe... but your feet describe a small acute angle not two parallel lines) In my opinion, that's where you need to work... with YOUR "perfect" 5th... not someone elses! Work hard with your turn out and things WILL improve...

Merde!
you said your knees? were too big, - maybe your turning out from the wrong place - u're supposed to turn it out from your hips - but you could be right too.
Good question.

There are several possible reasons for your inability to straighten your legs in fifth. The first is that you aren't pulled up. You may have heard this solution before, but pretend there is a wire running off your head and someone is pulling the wire up. Support your shoulders with your collarbones, and focus mainly on pulling your body upwards.

Another problem is that you may be hyper extended. There's nothing wrong with hyper extension, but when you're at the barre you might want to relax a little. If you notice your kneecaps are "up", or your legs are curved inwardly, it's probably because you're hyper extended. The way to rid yourself of the frustration and discomfort of inability to close your fifth properly is to simply bend your knees a fraction. You'll feel your knees bent, but they'll be perfectly straight. Ask your teacher if you're hyper extended, because believe me they will know.

Another problem that may be occurring is that you're rolling in. Never, never, never, ever force your turnout. I swear, you'll regret it when you're older, when you won't be able to use your knees properly anymore. It's perfectly natural for you to be more turned out in a plie, but as you're coming up, don't keep that turnout, because it's not natural. When your roll in, it's forced turnout and your ankles roll toward your big toes. Always fight to keep your weight on your pinkie toes.

Turn out properly. Use your hips and your po-po (sorry... that's what I call it for my students so I'm not saying butt ;-]). Use the very very bottom muscles to turn out. By simply tensing your bottom po-po muscles, your feet and legs will automatically turn out without you doing anything. Turning out from here will also help you turn and when you're on pointe. Be careful, though, because many people interpret this as "clench my butt. gotcha" and develop a useless and overbuilt bottom. Don't let this happen to you!! Be turnout smart. ;]

And as for pointe shoes, I always started out with grishkos, but that's because of my high arch and strong ankles. I would recommend not buying blochs. they are an american brand, and therefore are built so that the shoe molds oddly and breaks in for an untrained foot. I prefer russian brands. I highly suggest getting your pointe shoes fitted professionally (which, to be honest, are usually in small dusty shops where the man who fits you goes into a room full of dusty shelves and countless shoeboxes, and returns within 20 seconds with your shoe), rather than have them done at a commercial shop such as dance ten. don't order them over the internet. That's probably the most unwise thing you can do.

I admire your dedication to your craft and respect you for recognizing your problems and seeking help. I also respect you seeking out help from experienced dancers on your shoes. Kudos!

Hope I helped, honey.??

ps. richlyhp: merde means "s h i t" in french, in case you didn't know. ? pardon my.....french.
Well it depends on the pointe shoe to answer your first Q. I have Inspiration Bloch pointe shoes and they were 55 dollars. It is usually between 50 dollars to 75 dollars. It also costs an additional amount of money to get them fit. Also I would suggest sheepskin toe pads for your first pair. Ask the people fitting you, they will know the best thing. Also, to answer your 1st Q, it means you need to work on your turn out. To find your natural turn out for fifth position, go on your heels (use a bar or railing for support) and turn out as much as you can while your toes are still in the air and lower them in that same spot. To improve turnout you can do an excercise i do alot in bed. just lie down on your back with your legs straight in front of you, and turn out as much as you can. This will help you becuz, you can't cheat while doing this. If you have any other pointe Q's, or anything else that has to do with dance email me at dancingstar7@gmail.com

How do you make a ballet bun with out hair net?

i am really bad at doing my hair for ballet.i cant get it tight no matter what i do! i cant even get a tight pony tail! i need help please

How do you make a ballet bun with out hair net?opera ticket

if you have very long straight hair....put your hair in a highish and tight ponyatil if u are finding it hard ask a friend to do it for you and twist the pontail round while it is hanging like a ponytail and curl it round the base of the ponytail. it helps if you use a few ponytails to make the first ponytail so that there is more to swivel the ponytail round...

if you have very long curly/wavey or frizzy hair try gelling it or using mouse just after you wash it when the hairnis wet it will help it sit properly..and do just as above

if you have medium length haier do as above but use a few kirbie grips hair slides or clips or use a hairband to grip back some smaller hairs at the front...

if you have short hair (above shoulder length) do not try ans bun your hair put it in a ponytail and put some pretty clips and a fabric hairband in and you will look very good

if you are having trouble with your hair for ballet go and buy a bun net it helps..

How do you make a ballet bun with out hair net?pacific theater opera theater

Use gel or hair spray. Slick it back into a ponytail. Place a donut (made for bun making) around the ponytail and place a rubberband over the hair so that it folds around the back of the donut. Use bobby pins to keep the hair under the donut. As long as you wash and condition your hair often - the gel and hairspray won't harm it.
look. first it helps if u take a shower b4 practice. i know that u get sweaty but it helps to put up your hair first. then barely blowdry it straight then brush it back. put your hair into a ponytail and then take and twirl it and then rapp it around your ponytail holder. then take a rubber band and rapp it....i promise it works.
Use two rubber bands instead of one to make it tight. it doesnt even necessarily have to be high, as long as the hair if oss your neck. What I usually do is use to bands ot put it up, then make a messy bun (frankly, im really uncoordinated!), then put another band around that. This si where a hair net is so useful so I really do reccommend them. You'll put that around tehe bu a few times ot hold the ends down. then use pics ot secure it. I like those old lady pins, the wggley ones, as opposed to bobby pins.
My hair is about the same length...I pull my hair up the tightest I can...then take an old, clean sock...cut the toes out of it and roll cut end to top of sock...it'll look like a huge scrunchie...put the ponytail through the rolled sock and spread the ponytail from the middle-out over the rolled sock and twist any excessive hair around the sock countre clock wise bobby pinning it as you go...then any sprigs of hair that didn't go up in the ponytail can be hairsprayed and bobby pinned...
First of all to get a tight pony tail you need to have a thick strong hair tie. you need to rap it around untill it's tight. then you should seperate your hair in half and pull out to tighten it to your head.

next make sure you buy bobby pins LOTS of them!

twist your hair and rap it around your hair tie so it looks like a bun. hold it tight and use bobby pins to secure it. you will need at leased 6 to hold it tightly on there

then if you want you can put hair spray in your hair to get rid of the frizzy's

i hope that helps :)

Proud marine Girlfriend and dancer of 15 years
it is soooo much easier to make a bun in hair that is wet. then after you put it in a really tight ponytail, twist your hair into a bun, then put another alastic aound it or some open bobby pins! (put lots of hair spray in it)

What are the levels in ballet?

And also, what sort of things should I be able to do in Level 3 ballet? I'm 13 and just starting and the instructor said it would be hard. I want to be able to do at least something before the classes start.

Please help!

What are the levels in ballet?violin

Every studio has different levels. Mine is pre-ballet till level 6. Then we have intro to pointe until pointe 3. Try stretching at home. Try your left, right and middle splits. Hold each for 45 seconds. If you do this every day your flexibility will certainly improve. You could also purchase a theraband to strengthen your feet. Look around at www.discountdance.com to purchase leotards and dance items. The most beneficial things that you can to are stretching. Once you go to your first class you can practice steps that are hard or award at home, this way you will improve greatly. Best of luck!

What are the levels in ballet?chinese theater opera theater

depends on what your studio considers level 3. it also depends on what syllabus they follow...im assuming its not checceti, because they use grades not levels, and it involves testing to move up, you dont just fall into a 3...it might be RAD (royal academy of dance) or vagonova, but without knowing what syllabus they use i cant really begin to take a guess. you should know the positions, the port de bras positions, tendu, battmant, developpe', plie, releve'. as well as some core terminology. look it up on youtube or wikipedia. good luck.
I'm 19 and i'm in my second year of Ballet. My dance school doesn't do levels other than begginer and advanced. I'm in the advanced class which pretty much does every step in the book but pointe. I would suggest you get a ballet book that shows you how to do the basics and more.
It depends on the studio. Mine are:

Ballet I

Ballet I/II

Ballet III/IIII

Ballet B/C that is the highest and most intese level. I am in this level...

I don't really know what to tell about what you should now... most of the basics. Like I said each studio is different.

Good luck and happy dancin!
Ive heard ppl talk about levels but I have no idea what it is. At my studio its grade 1, 2, 3 and so on. But if level 3 is like grade 3; [cough cough gonner cough] its gonna be really hard

I am starting a college ballet class and wondering what should I wear?

I am a bit overweight 150 lbs but hold it mostly in my bust and thighs. I plan to wear leotard and tights at least under my clothing so what can I wear on top to make it a bit more modest. I'll more than likely be running to my next class directly after my ballet class so it needs to be somewhat appropriate for class. I know you can wear yoga pants and such but can you get those from a dancer store?

I am starting a college ballet class and wondering what should I wear?musicals

It's a good idea to wear a leotard and tights to the first class just in case the teacher is strict. However, it would be extremely rare for non-dance majors to have to adhere to a strict dress code. Mostly, ballet teachers need to see your body shape (which means no button-down mens shirts) and you need to be able to move easily. Therefore, outfits consisting of sports bras + camis on top, along with booty shorts, biker shorts, or yoga pants on the bottom should be just fine. Also, feel free to wear whatever underwear you like as long as no panty parts show. Layering helps, as do thong panties. I'm sure you'll quickly get a sense of the wide array of options after your first class.

you can buy yoga pants or ballet shorts in almost any dance store.

also you can try sweaters (for dancing) or leg warmers which adult or professional dancers use during class.

if you've got on a skirt or ballet shorts, you can just slip on a t-shirt or jacket when going to your next class!

if you look up in the Internet, you can check all kinds of neat ballet wear!
if you're required to wear a leo and tights, blck and pink are the traditional combination. if you can wear yoga pants, they are available at dance shops, but much cheaper at places like target or walmart. just make sure they're fitted enough for the teacher to see your legs. on top, you can wear a ballet sweater, or just a fitted t-shirt, as long as the teacher approves and she can see how your body is moving. your prof will most likely go over the dress code and answer all your questions the first day of class. good luck, you'll really enjoy this!
Generally,a bra%26amp;panties aren;t worn underneath%26amp;yes,you should be able to find yoga pants in a dance wear store.Try an over-size man's buttondown shirt for a top%26amp;add legwarmers.
At disountdance.com , there are leotards with built in bras, and they are cheaper than an average dance store, and they are very reliable. Also, built in wirless bras are much more comfortable for dancers with bigger busts. (compaired to a average bra under a leotard) Built in ballet bras give much more support, and stop that uncomfortable bouncing that happens when you jump or turn. Make sure that your dress code at the ballet place that you are going to lets you wear clothes over your leo and tights. If not, or if it's too uncomfortableto dance in clothes, you can also find many leotards that aren't as revealing. Hope this helps!

well I can't say for sure what comes from ballet, but a lot of steps from ballet are used or modified in other styles.
Jazz, Tap, Ball Room, Salsa. Ballet started 1653 So alot of dancing comes from Ballet

depends on where you live cuz most cities have dance stores
If you have small feet (size 5 to 6) you can always try the children's section at payless. They have tap and ballet shoes (though not toe ballet shoes) for less than $20 each. I hope that helps :)
Well, I guess it depends on where you live. Have you heard of "Play-It-Again Sports"? It's a store chain where they sell used sports equipment. I got a pair of really nice hockey ice skates for only $8.

Good luck with your business:)!
Believe it or not, Payless Shoesource and Walmart both sell tap and ballet shoes. I'm sure they aren't expensive there. Check them out if you live in a city near one store or the other.

One good thing about Payless is if the store you go doesn't have your size or what you are looking for their new computer/cash register can locate the closest pair to you.

Im 15 ive been training ballet since 13 6hours a week cani be professinale?theater

Can I be a professional dancer? Short answer - probably not. Truth is (and I hope I'm wrong) is that while you seem to have a passion for ballet, you are probably short on talent and that's the bottom line. No amount of classes is going to change that or make up for that lack. You are years behind the training curve at this point too. By now you should be the best in your class and should have been in nationally recognized summer dance intensives for at least the last two years (like Joffrey, ABT, Rock School etc. on a scholarship. You clearly are not there, and it may time to face facts and realize that your odds of becoming a professional ballerina are extremely remote if not non-existent. Take the suggestions that "you can do anything if you want it bad enough" with a grain of salt. I know tis is not what you want to hear, but it is probably the truth.

That being said, there is no reason you can't continue training to become the best dancer you can. You may turn out good enough to dance in college and amatuer shows when you get older.

Training? You need at least 4 1 1/2 hour classes plus 1 or 2 1 hour pointe classes a week minimum. Presumably there is a dance company associated with your dance school that rehearses a Nutcracker and a Sping show for several hours on Saturdays. Talk to your teachers and your studio director for a full evaluation of your potential.

Im 15 ive been training ballet since 13 6hours a week cani be professinale?london theatre opera theater

It doesn't matter how long you train, it's how well you do. A three- year old can draw all the time, however, he won't draw Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa
Okay....you seem very passionate about Ballet...and that is the key of becoming a pro! If you believe in yourself, then you can achieve anything...this saying may be old but it's soooo incredibly true! Have the drive to practice practice practice (practice makes perfect)...but don't stress out on it! If becoming a pro ballerina is not possible...study hard in school :D but ballet will always be a hobby :) lifelong?
You obviously have the passion for it, which is an incredible help - and actually I don't think that the timing is completely off. Until right before you go on pointe, you don't want to spend too much time in the studio. You might want to try increasing the 6 hours a week because that's not as much as it sounds. Check and see if your dance studio has an early release program for students your age and see whether or not you can get into it. Most of the very serious dancers go through that and also start checking out dance camps - they don't have to be the ones associated with companies or big schools but just ones where you can refine your technique and get some exposure to other types of dance just for fun. Just keep in mind that the dance world if very competitive and that if you don't have the feet or the body type, it doesn't always matter if you have the passion. Enjoy ballet for what it is - a way to express yourself through movement - keep practicing and working on both your technique and your artistry and have fun with it
First I would talk with your parents see what they think. I think you should also ask your teacher what else you should do. I think if you just work hard and are serious then you can become a dancer no matter what.
take about 3 ballet classes and about 2 pointe classes and each year do a little more, you have a passion for dance which is what really matters

when you do pointe don't just do pointe work on tecniqe too!

I love dance and every year I do a little more, in 2 weeks i'll be old enough to try out for the pro. training program at my school which means I can take as many classes as I want a week for one price, look for programs like that in your area and when you feel ready try out for it!

alos summer intensives give you ALOT of experiance!

hope I helped!

-stephanie??
You are getting a little up there, but it sounds like you have a solid foundation, and the requisite passion. The key for you right now is getting with the right teachers, in the right schools. They can better evaluate your ability and your potential.

If they dissuade you from a career in ballet you could always look into other forms of expressive dance. Dance is man's earliest and most elemental art forms.

Hopefully, your parents are supportive and will help you get evaluated. If not, beware of strangers that claim they can *help* you. You might be mature and worldly for a 15 year old, but there are definitely predators out there.

Most schools of any quality will offer a teen and/or adult beginners class. If a school tries to put you in with little kids, I wouldn't enroll there anyway because they probably don't have any idea what they're doing. Ballet is a good place to begin for any dance education, as it is a basis for many other types of dance (tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, etc.).

well.. this is my 8 th year taking ballet ... but dont worry about getting stuck with little ons cuz they will put u in a group with teens your age .. and if they see that u really are bad they will give u a sheet saying to come to private corses
They most likely will place you in a class of your own age group at the same level.
They will probably place you in a teens class, who even though started late, will go a little bit faster so you can catch up to where you are sopposed to be if you had started on time.
usually they put you in a class with your age group. usually beginners or a couple years.

but you do the same stuff

so it doesnt matter.
i would try a smaller studio. there u will be with a range of kids that probably dont have any more experience than u do. im in a class with a total of four kids and they range from 9-13. so don't worry about it too much
It depends on the school. Some schools have a teen ballet class for beginners.
most dance schools offer classes for all ages and skill levels. They will have older advanced classes and older beginner classes. Same goes for younger kids. You shouldn't be put with younger kids. If you're not sure, just go to the dance studio and ask.
You should definately go for the ballet class! It works great if your at a good dance studio. Its very fun and I love it! Barre isnt as fun as pointe and other things, but overall i think ballet is the best thing you should do. The dance school you choose will probably have a teen class, with people and teenagers who either stopped doing ballet and would like to continue, or women in their 20-30s, and kids who decided not to do pointe and chose to do ballet recreationally instead, and of course, there are some people with no ballet experience. That group of people is obviously not too hard to keep up with, and the teacher will just give you a workout with elementary and basic ballet material. Try out different dance studios and take a preview kind of class to make sure you like it there, unless you already have a definate place to go to. Hope this helped! GOOD LUCK!

I very nice suit, even a tux for you and the equivelant for your GF. This will be attended by the elite and they will be dressed in their best. Many of these cultural affairs are more "See and be seen" affairs than for the enjoyment of the event itself. Considering this, you want to "Be Seen" in the best possible clothing in very conservative style.
I'm going to assume (being from Toronto myself) that you are going to see the Nutcracker!

I would recommend dress depending on what time your show is. If it is in the afternoon you can dress down a bit, a nice shirt, and slacks will do.

However, if the show is at night I would suggest dress pants and a nice collared shirt, with or without a tie. Depending on your age, and comfort level I might even recommend a suit or jacket (nothing too too fancy, not a tux). Also because of the time of year people will be dressing up a bit more.

For girls I would suggest some nice dress pants or a skirt and a dressy top, or even a simple cocktail dress. Don't show too much skin, you want to dress rather conservatively.

Basically look presentable, and make sure you're comfotable in what you're wearing! Have fun

Anyone have their child in ballet?

I was curious as to what was a good age to get a child into ballet and also what it costs more of less. Thanks!

Anyone have their child in ballet?opera songs

I believe that this depends on what you want to get out of the ballet classes. You really don't want to start anyone younger than 3, or they won't get much out of it. 3 is a good age, regardless of your goals. The upper age limit is really more important if you plan for your child to dance seriously. She should start classes no later than age 5 at a professional ballet school if this is the case. The dance school is really important, also depending on your goals. There are many dance schools that are geared towards having fun, developing coordination, etc. If you plan for your child to have professional training, you want to do a lot of research into the ballet school first.

As far as cost goes, this varies significantly depending on school and part of the world. Most schools have a monthly tuition based on the number of classes attended (i.e. 1 time per week for a little one). It gets super expensive if she becomes serious about it and is taking 8-10 classes a week (high school age ususally). Sorry I can't give you more of a ballpark -- it varies so much.

I also thought I'd mention that I wish I had more training in other areas of dance instead of concentrating 100% of my time on ballet -- especially since my career is not in dance. I would love to be good at other types too. I will definitely put my daughter in all types so she can choose what she likes (if any!)

Anyone have their child in ballet?secure browser opera theater

I was three when I started. Though, I didn't technically start in ballet. It was a pre-ballet/dance movement prep course for the level one class. But I was three.

I have no idea how much it costs anymore. The company I'm going to go back to is fairly expensive by my standards(about $150 a month for two classes I think)
I was around 8 when I started, but you can start them as early as 3. I would suggest that if your child is younger than first grade then put them in just a dance class. It will give the the boost they need for ballet, plus ballet can be hard on the body. The prices vary on where you go, if its a professional dance studio with competitions then it will be a lot. If I remember right it was around $100+ (the cheapest) a month plus outfits and fees for competitions. Check around in your area and churches, most of them will have a free dance class for younger kids.

Also, as a FYI, make sure that their feet have stopped growing before you put them in pointe class, it can stunt their growth and sericously damage their feet for life!

Hope that helps!
i was 5 when i started and im still doing it going into high school. as she gets older its helpful to keep the ballet and maby add a few other classes because dance/ drill team don't just use one type of dance but they use all kinds. also as they get older they can get into point which is a higher ballet . its the kind that goes up on your toes. i started that in 3rd grade

The leotards aren't all that different for men and women, but you should probably wear ballet stirrup tights, unishorts, or dance pants specifically made for men. Oh, and don't forget the "dance belt" style of underwear.

Would any girls go out with me if I were taking Ballet classes?

I am 19, straight, and single and I really want to start taking Ballet lessons. I was just wondering if there were any girls out there that would date a guy who did ballet. I am a little over 6'8" tall, thin, and in good shape go to the gym every day. I am a dedicated Baptist, and go to church every week. I am in Junior college. That is my background, but I just wondered if any girls would go out with me if I were in Ballet class?

Would any girls go out with me if I were taking Ballet classes?chicago theater

oh yea lol.

some girls are a little shocked when the kno that a guy does ballet tho...but girls who do ballet are used to it. and if you think about it, there are a lot of reasons that a guy would want to take ballet classes, and not just because he likes the dancing haha. but thats usually part of it because no one wants a perv in tights in class lol.

but yea lots of girls date male dancers, even ballet, its a sport that takes a lot and is impressive. =)

Would any girls go out with me if I were taking Ballet classes?met opera opera theater

Hell yeah. Male ballet dancers are strong and toned.
r u gay? if u r going to take ballet lessons than u must be gay
what's wrong with ballet class?? yes, of course! if i were the girl then i would be proud dating someone who can do ballet..
I guarantee that more guys than girls would love to go out with you if you become a ballet dancer.

But you're into chicks. Most girls would probably assume you're gay at first -- you must realize this -- but then they would find you quite alluring after they "discover" you're not. Girls love the fine arts -- ballet, theater, etc. -- they find it sexy -- so go for it, dude, but only if you like ballet yourself. Why?

Because ballet is hard to do -- I mean, really, really hard to do, if you want to do it well. You work muscles that you never knew you had, and you punish your toes into bleeding little nubs. I guarantee to you that if you get involved in ballet just to impress some girls, you will fail miserably at ballet, and if you fail miserably at ballet, you will fail to impress the ladies.

It's much easier to become a cosmetologist/hairdresser. Girls would find you alluring for the same reasons as stated above -- that you're in a profession typically deemed "gay" but you're not gay yourself.

Funny story: My grandfather was a male cheerleader in high school, and that's how he met my grandmother.
I think that taking ballet is cool, and as long as a girl can see how confident you are in what you're doing, I'm sure she'll think you're cool too. Just don't act like it's one big joke, explain why it's something that you really like to do. (And make sure you don't date anyone that's not a Christian.

2 Corinthians 6:14 - Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?)

Keep being bold with your faith!

God bless!
i would..i love ballet and i know how hard it is

How do I select a Ballet slipper that will suit my needs?

Having purchased everything I need for my first ballet lesson I starting to think that I may have purchased a pair that are unsuitble for my needs. I stuck with a well known brand Capezio, as I am only a beginner starting my first lessons the Capezio Juliet canvas split sole were recomended to me as I would have a better feel of were my feet are position but the more I research into which pair would be most suited to a beginner the more I feel I have chosen the wrong pair as there are so many variable support, etc, etc. Can anybody give a simple understanding of what pair I should be starting out in.

How do I select a Ballet slipper that will suit my needs?theatre tickets

I'vedanced for 22 years, and working in dance retail put me through college. For an older dancer (like, above the age of nine...)I always suggest a split sole. The Capezio Juliet is a great shoe. I personally don't like canvas, but the Juliet has a nice profile. Its also available in leather, but there are people who swear by canvas, its just a matter of personal preference. Cnavas does wear out much quicker thanleather, so if you decide you want to try a new style afterward, you won't be stuck with them forever. Generally speaking though,I think you'll be pleased with them.

How do I select a Ballet slipper that will suit my needs?opera house opera theater

You have the right pair already. Since you are a beginner, you really need a sense of where your feet are, so the ones you have are perfect. Once you have learned how it feels to be in each position, and where your feet need to be, then you can move onto some other slippers.
you may want to try out whole soles, instead of split soles. but otherwise, capezio is a great brad, that should work just fine :]

good luck!
split sole canvas are great, because you'll be able to "feel the floor" more [a term you'll learn sooner or later] and it also gives you flexibilty in the shoe as well as support. i personally use bloch canvas split sole.. so you definitely have the perfect shoe. you might also want to sew elastics on the shoe like an x over your shoe if you havent already.

How do you clean your ballet slippers/shoes?

I came back from class and they were really dirty. I'm new at ballet so I don't know how I should clean them :)

How do you clean your ballet slippers/shoes?hollywood theater

Since they are canvas all you have to do is throw them in the washer. Don't put them in the dryer though. the best way to dry them is to lay them flat till they are just damp, then wear them around the house until dry. this forms them to your feet, in fact many dancer's wash their shoes as soon as they get them to make them fit better. hope this helps

but.. i just dont know if it does anything bad to the shoe .. hehe

ive been doing it for a while now, and my shoes are fine ; Report It

The upper part of the shoes are leather. So, I would recommend just cleaning them of with just some mild detergent. When I took ballet, I found this to be effective in cleaning my shoes.
If you are wearing leather shoes then definitely hand wash them, but if your shoes are canvas you can throw them in the washer. Just don't machine dry.
Like the previous answers, I suggest hand washing if they are leather. If they are canvas you can wash them in the machine, but I'd recommend putting them in a lingerie bag just to be safe.
i always washed them in the washing machine

I really want to do ballet?

I've cheered and done gymnastics since a kid...I'm 21 now..and I've always been told that I have the ideal body for a dancer. Well, I want to do ballet...but I just feel like I'll be dorky because I'm too old. I know a lot of ppl who start out as kids, dancing. So what do you think? Tips? Advice? Should I give it a try???? Or no? I'm leaning toward yes, because I think it'd be cool...but I wanted other ppl's opinions. Thanks!!!!!

I really want to do ballet?

You may be too old to become a pro, it will take years for you to learn all the things you would know by now if you had started as a child. I do think you should try, though. Ballet is beautiful and graceful. If you have a passion for it, then you are never too old to start. Now, GO DANCE!!!

I really want to do ballet?opera mobile opera theater

Go for it!

try to find a beginers class for ppol your age. Don't feel dorky, ballet is fun %26amp; great for all ages; No matter when you start.

I think you should totally do it.

have fun!
there are a lot of adult dance classes that offer ballet.

call different dance centers in your area, and you have some experience because of cheer and gymnastics so youll be fine!!
I think you should go to a local studio and ask to join a ballet class...I am a young dancer and in one of my ballet classes there is a older woman who just takes the class for exercise. However she used to be dancer so it's a bit of a different story. Some studios do have adult beginner ballet classes so go check it out.
I say just give it a go, if you dont tend to like and enjoy it, just stop. I think your a bit too old to become a professional ballet dancer, but if you already have good flexiblility and can catch on quick, you could be quite good. Like i said b4, just give it a go.
try it of course i dance ballet since im 6 but a friend of mine got in last year she is 17 and she is really good dont worry for the litle ones u鈥瞝l obiously get in a much higher level in short time u just need the feeling any feeling to dance just express it it gets out all ur worrys and if u dance with ur heart and u鈥瞝l b really good dont worry many people have been in ballet for about 20 years and theyr as good as peopl with 3 years in ballet u just need to feel it and the music so try it
as the lady at broadway dance in the movie center stage says "GO FOR IT!!!!"
Hm, well your never too old to start dancing.

But professionally? Probably not.

And yes, cheerleading and gymnastics will help you with being "fit" for dance, but as far as the fundamentals and technique. Im not sure, It looks alot easier than it is..you know? And cheering nor gymnastics will not help you "learn faster" because they are both nothing like ballet. Ballet is an art, not a sport.

Usually girls start at a very young age, are on pointe by usually 12 or so, and are nearly at a professional level by their late teens. I just know that we have older inexpirianced girls come into our class, only because they would simply be embarassed to join a beginner or intermediate class which is 4-10 year olds. You know? And not to be bitchy, but I honestly just laugh at them.
Yes I think you could definitly do ballet. You just have to work hard. I started out as a little kid (4) but I've known people who have started at thirty so you won't be dorky. I definitly think you should try it and if you really enjoy it maybe someday you'll be able to go pro. Good luck!!

Dark skinny jeans. Preferably from Abercrombie %26amp; Fitch.
I would do jeans better knee length jeans maybe white or light colored shirt with same color belt as the flats. -my opinion-
They would look good with neutral coloured clothing.
Hmm... Ballet flats can be worn with almost anything. I know they'd look good with black pants and a great shirt that's not in a shocking colour.. Try skinny-leg jeans and a cute top with a bolero. that would look good
Dark jeans and a neutral top, maybe blue?
I think dark jeans and neutral colors for the pants
Perhaps a tunic with tights, and you might want to experiment with the colours because different colours go well with different skin tones.
well,, first of all, ballet flats are off, but u can wear grey with a pinkk dress, skinny jeans, anythingg gray looks gr8 with all colors
And why did you get the colour gray?????? hmmmmmmmm?

I know a little ballet, mostly technique, from high school colorguard. You probably know tons more than me actually because we dabbled in several different types of dance. That tiny little experience I do have (and after being on a team and close friends with a ballet dancer) I have come to respect anyone who devotes themselves to the art form because it takes a lot of hard work, training and dedication to do what they do.
it is so beautiful and people would be surprised at how much strength it takes. ballet dancers have the most graceful mannerisms and they are unbelievably flexible! that is awesome that you are into ballet.
exotic, extraordinary and romantic.I would actually want to learn it some day after i start earning for myself.
Having danced Ballet when I was younger. I have found that it is as much a work out as the martial arts. As well as an expression of emotion. Anyone who does not like Ballet most likely is of the opinion that classical music is only for old people. The most important thing is that if you find enjoyment in dancing it does not matter what anyone else might think. If you think that only women like Ballet, think again. Also if you delve into sports history, you will find that some of the great athletes in professional sports have taken Ballet in order to enhance their ability to perform better as an athlete
I love it !!! I'm actually takin ballet classes it rather relaxing but its work. i enjoy watching anything about ballet. Its so pretty in peaceful.

Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to participate in the art of ballet, but my parents could never afford it. I was stuck with regular ways to stay in shape and had to develop gracefulness on my own. I think ballet is an awesome way to describe yourself while dancing and is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

I'm a professional, and I have 7 daughters, 6 of them are ballerinas, and the older 4 are getting serious. Hannah was Clara the last two years, and Taylor is Clara this year. Leuscha and Maggie are both party girls and polichenelles (mother ginger) and Maggie is sleeping Clara, although that isn't really much of a part, she just lays in the bed in the beginning and the end because the real Clara can't get there fast enough. They chose her for that because she's pretty much a mini Taylor. Jordin is an elf and an Arabian paige, and Ella is a mouse and a Marzipan paige. I love ballet. It makes me so happy that people are still dancing and loving it, and I love seing childrens faces lght up the way mine does when they enter the studio or theatre!
i study ballet, and have a love/hate relationship with it. love it because it is dance, hate it because it is sooooooooooooo challenging ! :-)
I love it! I am sad that i have this week off for thanksgiving cause i want to be at the studio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! btw, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

oh, and for all u guys, who think its too girly, tons of guys do it too and i do it and i am NOt the least bit girly-

anyways, i love watching it too
ballet is amazing.. a lot of ppl think its weird and boring bcuz its slow but, i have been dancing for 8 yrs and i think its fun and it can be really pretty if u do it right ....but, professional is even better...the nyc ballet is awesome!
I love ballet! I've been dancing since I was 8, and I'm 12 now. I especially love pointe. I've been taking it for 2 years, and it hurts alot, but its really beautiful. I also love to perform!! this is my 4th year in a Nutcracker, and it's soooo fun. Ballet is not easy. You have to be EXTREMELY commited. With rehersals, I go to ballet 7 days a week!! You have to love it with all your body, or you won't get good at it. I love it!!
I LOVE IT! I dance ballet myself, and it is my biggest dream to become a professional!

It is the most graceful and beautiful sport ever!
ballet dancing is coolio~
I LOVE ballet!! I've been dancing since I was seven and I can't stop! I love the physical challenge of ballet and pointe, it feels great to master all the difficult steps. Ballet rocks!!! Good luck to all the dancers out there! =)
There are few people in my community who do ballet and most of them, friends included, think of it as a slow form of dance and only dancing on tippy-toes. I used to think it was a slow dance too, that's why I started it cos I'm a slow learner. But later I realised there are allegros and it took me by surprise but I've grown to love it because it has given me more grace, strength and flexibility. And it has opened me up to a whole new world of understanding how my body works and responds and I'm also learning a lot more about dance in its other forms.

GREAT costume! Really pretty. Try and avoid doing turns with your arms in 5th, I think that it doesn't look very nice... But if you didn't choreograph it, then its not your fault :)

-Good spotting

-Point your toes in the split-good to see that you didn't use your arms to support yourself tho :)

-And I really liked the whole going into the split, then rolling out of it-cool trick!

-Try and elongate your arms when in 5th-I know its hard because of the music and you can't stretch your arms fully.

I think you would have done heaps better if you were dancing by yourself and with slower music. But it was good to see that you were trying to keep in time. Was this just the conditions of the comp? I know if it was me I wouldn't of been very good in that kind of competition lol

Good Luck for any future comps though! Hope I helped :)

I need a new haircut, I have long plain hair, I want to get bangs but I am concerned about dance

In ballet we have to have no loose hair

For competitions we need a side part with no loose hair either

Do you have any suggestions for a good practical style

Thanks

i was in the same situation. strict dress code but wanted a haircut. I got side bangs that are a little longer so theyre easier to put up. It took me a while to figure out how to put my new haircut up into a new bun but after you figure out what you have to do its really easy. i just get a few clips to clip my bangs back, some hairspray and your good to go.

Haircut, Im a dancer, strict ballet dress code?movie theater opera theater

if you want bangs, go for it. but i will warn you that it is a hassle. you either have to gel them back, or carry some clips or bobby pins with you at all time. just keep that in mind.

you could also try getting layers and getting the front of your hair angle up towards your face. this will make you hair more interesting down, but also will be easier to put up.
I suggest you talk with your troupe leader and find out more details. Maybe they have a pictures of past performers that can help you find a hairstyle that doesn't interfere with your competition.

If anything keep your bangs long enough that you can comb them over to allow you to have a part in your hair and pin them up so that they are uniform with everyone else.

Also tell your hair stylist that what you need for competition, they might know how to help you.
don't do it unless u want to put gel in ur hair every time u go to ballet
you'll have to gel your hair alot... get side bangs if you really want to it's ultimately up to you though
go for it! i did and i'm in the same sitiuation, and it works fine!for class i'll usually put in a headband and a few clips and pins and put the rest in a bun, and it's easy as that! for competitions and performances, i need a few more clips and pins and a lil gel and hairspray, and i'm good to go!

Just practice! Have fun! And try your best!

When you practice really focus on what your doing, if you have to go slower then normal while practicing to get the technique right then do so! And if you don't pass the exam life will go on! In all reality I think the only thing that should matter when you dance is if your having fun. Nobody should ever beable to stop you and tell you that you aren't a good enough dancer.

I need desprate help for my grade 4 ballet exam!?home theater opera theater

Practice! I know that sounds hokey but practice! Also, the night before the exam do NOT do the dance. Limit yourself to practice it until about 6 or 7 that night, then get to be early to energize yourself. Dont get nervous! Good Luck!!
I take exams too. I didn't do very well on my grade 4 exam. The key is definately to show expression in your face according to the exercise and the music. I will promise you that this will get you a good grade. Remember its all in the facial expression.
